While Portsmouth have looked a very dangerous outfit at Fratton Park, Bristol Rovers have struggled to get going offensively on their travels. Tuesdays visitors have scored in four of their last five on the road, but theyve failed to find the net in a rather chunky 40% of their travelling matches during the current campaign, while theyre averaging just 0.99 expected goals for. Such a poor figure doesnt bode well ahead of this match.

Bristol Rovers vs Portsmouth Stats

Last time out, they got both, so its now a case of trying to kick on. After a couple of useful offensive performances, Rovers were due a win, while they were due a bit of luck at the back. Going forward Darrell Clarkes men are always likely to cause teams problems; theyve got quality players in the final third, while they try to play an attacking game; however, theyre often caught out by being both wasteful and easy to breach at the other end.

If they can start as positively as they did at Roots Hall, then a relatively weak Bristol Rovers side is unlikely to stand much of a chance at Fratton Park. Given how impressive they were in the first half on Saturday, it was surprising to see Portsmouth whimper in the second 45, though theyre unlikely to make that mistake twice.

Last time out at home, they were unlucky not to beat a very strong Doncaster side, as they recorded an impressive 2.88 expected goals for and conceded just 0.88 at the other end. Tuesdays hosts havent been getting the desired results of late, but some of their attacking efforts suggest that it wont be long before theyre back in the winners enclosure. Whats more, Jacketts men have considerably outperformed their opponents in terms of expected goals in each of their last ten at home, while theyre now averaging an expected goal difference of +1.17 on home soil.

After that confidence-boosting win, the hosts will be hoping to win again. Bristol Rovers could certainly consider themselves unlucky on the opening day, while they probably didnt deserve to lose against Accrington second time out. However, Darrell Clarkes men didnt dwell on their misfortunes and returned to Bristol from Wycombe with all three points on match-day three.

In terms of results and overall play, Portsmouth have done better than Bristol Rovers over the first few weeks of the season, and although this will be no easy game for the visitors. If they can sit back and keep things tight, which they often did on the road last season, then the visitors could really hurt the hosts on the break. Pompey have the quality to hurt a Rovers back-line that never looks overly sharp. After all, the counter-attack proved to be an excellent tactic for Portsmouth once they forced Oxford onto them at the weekend.

Highlighted Player (Mark Little):

After a couple of games where they simply got the job done, Portsmouth sprung into life against Oxford at the weekend, especially in the second half, where they upped their forward efforts and were rewarded with no less than four goals. If Jacketts side can continue to get forward like they did at Fratton Park on Saturday, then they wont be far away from the top two come May.

Under Kenny Jackett during the last campaign, Pompey became tough to beat, and if their early-season form is anything to go by, then it would appear as though theyre going to be hard to face this time around too. In contrast, Portsmouth have been defending well this season, while theyve looked clinical going forward, despite being far from the most creative team in the division.
