Florida State (@3.6) vs Virginia (@1.3)

Our Prediction:

Virginia will win

Florida State – Virginia Match Prediction | 14-09-2019 19:30

Virginia had no trouble picking up Tony Bennetts 300th career win and the Cavaliers cruised to victory in the 2nd half after taking a 50-25 halftime lead. Virginia shot 53.2% from the field and outrebounded Marshall by a 45-23 margin in the victory. The 4th ranked Virginia Cavaliers stayed perfect on the season, improving to 12-0 (0-0 ACC) on the season after defeating the Marshall Thundering Herd, 100-64, this past Monday. Leading the way for the Cavaliers was Kyle Guy who had 30 points & 8 rebounds.

The public betting is strongly with Virginia tonight as well. Florida State has an offense that could cause problems for Virginia, but the Cavs have been so locked in that I am going to continue to ride their hot streak. If someone is going to find a weakness in the FSU offense, it is Virginia. They have kept their last 10 opponents under 65 points, which includes a road trip at Duke and a home game with UNC. Florida State has won the last two meetings with Virginia, but the two havent met since 2016.

Im not really sure whats going to happen. Not as far apart as the wizards of the desert think it is, but it being home field sure counts for something. For the sake of it being a home game at FSU, Id say that, much to my chagrin, the Noles win something like 34-28 or something to that effect.

While the young players could end up playing above their experience level, this is not a great matchup for so many players to be getting their first start. It is Florida States first game with Taggarts offense, but I expect to see the unit clicking with Francois back under center. Normally, we go into a college football season raving about Virginia Techs defense, but that is not the case for 2018.

The Seminoles won and covered the spread in their final four games against Delaware State, Florida, Louisiana-Monroe and Southern Mississippi to salvage a 7-6 record and a 4-8 mark against the spread. The university's relationship with head coach Jimbo Fisher was already deteriorating, and the dismal 2017 campaign ensured his exit from Tallahassee at season's end. Starting quarterback Deondre Francois went down in the season opener against Alabama, and it was all downhill from there. And while there were a couple of close losses early on for the Noles, single-digit victories against Wake Forest, Duke and Syracuse were needed to prevent an all-out disaster. We saw Florida State's floor last season, and it wasn't pretty.

But Virginia Tech was 16th in the country in run defense in 2017, and while the defense as a whole experienced serious attrition this offseason, all starters but one return along an excellent defensive front. The strength of FSU's offense is a rushing attack led by Cam Akers, who was a rare bright spot for the team last season with more than 1,000 yards on the ground in his freshman campaign. There's certainly an argument to be made for the Hokies keeping this one close.

Matchup Betting Odds & Notes

Virginia Tech isnt receiving a whole lot of love or attention on a national scale considering Clemson has been handed the ACC Championship already by many, Miami is the hot program, and FSU just made the big coaching switch but Justin Fuente has another good, strong team with the talent to at least get to the ACC title game for the second time in three seasons.

As a freshman, he really took care of the ball well, Virginia Tech offensive coordinator Brad Cornelsen explained to Richmond.com.

Even with some good backs in place running behind this line, the Hokies have to prove they can consistently crank out yards they have to get to at least four yards per carry, and thats not a given. Its a decent Hokie line, but its not a killer, and it has to prove it can be dominant at times for the ground game.

Taggart named Francois the starter last week. Anyone who has followed him is up big. The defense is young and inexperienced and could start as many as five sophomores. Secondary standouts Derwin James and Tarvarus McFadden have moved on to the NFL. The over-under for total points scored is 55, up from an initial offering of 50 after heavy action on the over. While losing Tim Settle, Tremaine and Terrell Edmunds, Greg Stroman, Brandon Facyson and others is never a good thing, we all know to never count out Foster. This is one season where I am truly not sure what to think about the Hokies one either side of the football. With so many standouts gone to the NFL, Bud Foster has a completely new group to work with defensively. He lives for this stuff.
